Graduate Associate Membership and Residencies
All Graduate Associate Memberships are currently frozen, due to the current pandemic. Our pilot Graduate-in-Residence scheme is also frozen.
HCA promised to review this situation in January 2021. But as you’ll be aware, the situation in the UK regarding Coronavirus continues to be volatile and we have therefore currently suspended standard on-campus teaching for seven weeks as part of the current national lockdown situation. Given this situation, we will continue to freeze all Graduate Associate Memberships and will continue to deliver all Enterprise sessions online.
Details of Enterprise sessions and other online opportunities to connect with HCA will be communicated through regular Launchgrad newsletters and on our blog. We will review the situation again in June and will let you know of any changes through our newsletter and blog.

Graduate Outcomes Survey
We’d like to thank those who MA Fine Art students who have already filled out their surveys – thank-you SO much – this really helps us. And if you haven’t already been sent a survey please keep an eye out for a link or text from the Graduate Outcomes team.
If you graduated from a BA course at HCA in the Summer of 2019 you may have already been sent a link to a national survey capturing the activities and perspectives of graduates, known as Graduate Outcomes.
We will use your survey responses to help us develop our courses here at HCA. Find out more about the Graduate Outcomes survey on their website, on our blog or by contacting us.

Online Masterclass with 2020 Turner Prize bursary recipient Shawanda Corbett
Monday 20 January, 5.30pm-7pm, free
On Wednesday 20 January the AD:Vantage Leadership programme in partnership with New Art West Midlands host an online masterclass with esteemed artist Shawanda Corbett. Her deeply personal and visceral work won her one of the ten Turner Prize bursaries selected by judges after the 2020 Prize was cancelled.
In this masterclass Shawanda will share her personal experience to illustrate the qualities required to hold a leadership position or be a cultural leader, but not necessarily the leader of a cultural institution. The session will explore her leadership journey, skills, and response to challenges, changes and insights.
HANAKO MURAKAMI X SIMON BAKER: From Here to There

This conversation traverses the processes, histories, and strategies of influence from the field of film and photography, exploring how artist Hanako Murakami adapts these techniques in her work. With Simon Baker, Director of Maison Européenne de la Photographie.
WELCOME TO THE LAST BREATH SOCIETY: MORTALITY, CARE, AND SOLIDARITY IN ZOMBIE TIME: Martin O’Brien

Martin will talk about his practice and research in relation to ideas of care, community, and solidarity in times of illness. He will discuss his notion of Zombie Time, or the temporal experience of living on longer than expected, as a way of understanding mortality and chronic illness.
Crafts Council One-to-one maker advice sessions
Thurday 14 January from 1.30pm, £60
These bespoke advisory hour-long sessions are for makers at all stages in their career to discuss ideas or concerns about their creative practice. The session is led by an experienced art and business development advisor. It is tailored for you and fully confidential, the session will enable you to talk about your ideas or concerns on your creative practice.

Apples & People
Apples & People is an online exhibition programme about the apple which will be launched later in January. A series of more than forty apple stories from around the world will be added to the website over the next eighteen months.
The stories are featured on the first ever apple world map painted for us by illustrator Helen Cann, which is shown here: www.applesandpeople.org.uk . Together, they provide a global and historical context to England’s orchards.
Each story will be enriched by imagery and other media to help tell that story, including works from art collections worldwide.
Apples & People is a partnership between the Brightspace Foundation, the Cider Museum, and the National Trust in Herefordshire, and is being helped by some of the world’s leading apple historians, scientists, and growers.
We are delighted to have funding to provide several small commissions to local professional artists across all media to help illustrate some of the apple stories. We are particularly keen to hear from you if your work has suffered due to the pandemic, whatever your art form – spoken word, poetry, film, painting, photography, illustration, sculpture, drama, dance, music, lighting and sound engineering or knitting…

The Unchained Library
Deadline: Thursday 25 February
The Unchained Library is a modern twist to The Chained Library housed at Hereford Cathedral which represented life during the 17th Century. The Unchained Library will be a representation of women’s lives in the 21st Century.
This is a unique and historic opportunity for us to record life through Book Spine Titles, and as illuminating as the Chained Library is for us all today and for centuries to come.
To take part in this exhibition think of a book title which represents your feelings during lockdown and the affects Covid has had on you. Consider the title and create and design a Book Spine in a medium that showcases your creativity. The only stipulation is the book size which would need to be no bigger than 40cm high & no wider than 15 cm wide and no smaller than 20cm or 10cm wide.
The finished work will be exhibited at HCA on International Women’s Day on 8 March 2021 (and available via an online exhibition page if we are still in lockdown).
Entries would be accepted via a panel and would be non-returnable. Please put your details on the reverse – we would like to know who has made it.

Artist commissioning opportunity – Photoworks x English Heritage
Deadline: Monday 11 January
Photoworks are partnering with English Heritage to offer a new commissioning opportunity for photographers aged between 18-25. Four artists will be invited to select an English Heritage site of their choice. Using that site as a springboard, artists can then create a new body of photographic work on the theme of identity and its relationship to ‘Englishness’. Photoworks are interested in presenting a diversity of perspectives on heritage.
RISING STARS 2021: CALL FOR EARLY CAREER MAKERS
Deadline: Sunday 10 January, 10am
Rising Stars is a curated, national platform to foster and champion new talent, early career makers, students and graduates from BA and MA crafts, design and applied arts programmes across the UK. Rising Stars offers new makers a first step into the market place, through a curated, selling exhibition. The 2021 focus will be on supporting new makers in the post COVID-19 market place. We recognise that there has been limited access to studios. Therefore, we also accept proposals that include prototypes of new work, available for commissions and will provide advice as required. One maker will be presented with a professional development award of £500 and a solo exhibition at New Ashgate in 2022.
Open call: The Amelia Scott Building Artist Commissions
Deadline: Monday 25 January
We are very excited to open our call for artists and designers to make proposals for 1 or more of the 7 commissions for The Amelia Scott Building as part of the Artscore programme. Through a series of capital works, Artscore places the arts at the centre of The Amelia as a physical entity and service, so enabling the Amelia to sustain a fully engaged public service for the arts within Tunbridge Wells Borough. These bespoke and site-specific artworks, developed by artists working with stakeholders, will establish and reflect on The Amelia’s function as an integrated cultural centre, embedding art and culture into the very fabric of the building.
Each commission brief is a call to propose ideas for a different part of the Amelia Scott Building. Click the links below to find out more about each commission

BBC Arts Culture in Quarantine Fund
To mark the 25th anniversary of the Disability Discrimination Act, BBC Arts, Arts Council England, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Arts Council of Wales and Creative Scotland have launched a new Culture in Quarantine commissioning round to celebrate the work of disabled, D/deaf and neurodiverse artists. Ten established disabled artists will be commissioned from across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to create new video or audio works to be published on BBC platforms in 2021. They want to hear from the full diversity of exceptional and established disabled artists, working in any discipline across the four nations. Proposals should be for video or audio content. There is no specific editorial brief: projects can – but do not have to – creatively respond to the disabled experience of living through the pandemic. The amount requested from the fund can be from £3,000 to £8,000 (ex. VAT). They can 100% fund projects or part-fund them.
Dover Art Prize 2021
The Dover Prize 2021 has launched with a prize fund of £17,500 to support excellence and experimentation in the arts, and is available to artists and creative practitioners from across the UK. Applications are welcome from artists working in the visual arts fields including painting, sculpture, ceramics, print- making, photography, digital art, film making, performance and installations. Also open to previous Dover Prize applicants.
Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants
National Lottery Project Grants is an open access programme for arts, museums and libraries projects. The fund supports thousands of individual artists, community and cultural organisations. Until April 2021, the fund will focus on the needs of smaller independent organisations and individual practitioners. National Lottery Project Grants supports a broad range of creative and cultural projects that benefit people living in England. It can support successful applications with grants from £1,000 up to £100,000. Individuals and organisations can apply, provided that they, live, or have a business address in the European Union, have a UK bank account in the exact name they’re applying in and are at least 18 years old or, for organisations, have an accountable person who is at least 18.
The Abbey Scholarship and Fellowships in Painting
Abbey Awards offer all expenses paid residencies at the British School at Rome for artists showing exceptional merit and promise. The Abbey Scholarship offers one annual nine month residency for an early career artist at The British School at Rome, with a monthly stipend of £1,000. The Abbey Fellowships offer three annual three month residencies for mid-career artists at The British School at Rome, each with monthly stipends of £1,500. Abbey Awards are open to UK and US citizens and artists of other nationalities who have been resident in the UK or US for at least five of the last ten years. There is an application fee of £25.
