Holland Otik Shop is now open

Previous HCA student and staff member, Holland Otik has opened a heavenly looking shop in Bastion Mews, Union Street, Hereford. Partly a studio for her own ceramics practice, the shop stocks works by (local) artists including t-shirts, ceramics, zines, jewelry and other beautiful oddities! It’s well worth a look inside as she has kindly offered 20% off books to HCA students writing their dissertation or masters report.

We’re now updating our new Launchgrad website with weekly news, events and opportunities. We hope to release monthly blogs with more specific advice and resources for creative graduates soon.

Joana Vasconcelos: Beyond

If you are able to make a trip up to Yorkshire Sculpture Park, check out this outdoor exhibition! Celebrated Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos creates vibrant, often monumental sculpture, using fabric, needlework and crochet alongside everyday objects from saucepans to wheel hubs. She frequently uses items associated with domestic work and craft to comment from a feminist perspective on national and collective identity, cultural tradition and women’s roles in society.

Making It: 3D Digital Sculpture with artist Sumit Sarkar

Wednesday 5th August, 7-9pm

Build your skills set with this interactive, online workshop, from Sumit Sarkar. He will demonstrate his working process and the type of creative tools you can use online. In the session you will have the opportunity to experiment with Blender, a free online programme. By the end of the workshop you will have produced a piece of sculptural digital art work.

The Collective Studio – 10 month development programme

Are you working out what you want to do next? Do you know what you want to do and need support and guidance? The Collective Studio provides spaces to test out ideas and experiment within a supportive and critically engaged community at The NewBridge Project, Gateshead in Newcastle. The Collective Studio provides affordable studios and workspace, and a programme of training, events, mentoring, socials and opportunities to exhibit work, which will suit a diverse range of practices and are tailored around the cohort.

The Shire: Young Creatives Board

The Young Creatives Board are looking for more artists to get involved in First Fridays – if you’re interested, please email Rural Media. YCB was established in 2019 and is supported by Herefordshire’s a Great Place, a project delivered by Rural Media on behalf of the Herefordshire Cultural Partnership. The members decided to host a First Friday in Hereford to bring people together for art, music and spoken word. The theme of the online First Fridays is well-being and the project has brought the artists together to host live watch parties on YouTube and share the work of local artists.

RBSA Prize Exhibition 2020

Deadline: Wed 19 August, 4pm

The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) stages an annual Prize exhibition as part of its charitable work to support artists, providing an opportunity for artists to show their artwork and be rewarded for their talents. All media accepted, excluding photography and the top prize is £1000, second prize is £500, and several more cash and gift prizes are to be won.

RWA Open 2020

Deadline: Tues 22 September, 5pm

Every year, the Royal West of England Academy holds an Open Exhibition – Anyone can enter their work for this mixed discipline show: previous years have included painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, film, sculpture and illustration, and attracted entries from artists across the UK and beyond. Artists will have the opportunity to win £8,000+ in cash prizes and to be featured on the cover of Evolver magazine.

Jerwood Art Fund Makers Open 2021

Deadline: Wednesday 26 August, 5pm

Jerwood Art Fund Makers Open 2021 is a major award for five early-career UK-based artists and makers to develop and present ambitious new works. They invite proposals for bold new work(s) using all forms of making and material experimentation. There are five awards of £8,000 each plus curatorial and production support from the Jerwood Arts team to support the making of new work over a six month period for a group exhibition in London, followed by a three-venue national tour through to 2022 including Aberdeen Art Gallery, Scotland.
